The instant I looked at it the shock went straight to my brain, shaking and stinging. Love at first site.
What clarity, clean in concept and execution, almost too good to be true.
The name of this genius bag is newneu. The front, back - even belt - is all velcro. Just that simple invention.
I started by attaching badges I like. I can attach as many, however I like. Easy, simple, clear. A bag which was simply black transforms into my own unique creation. The change doesn't stop, over time the bag continues evolve. I attach fur, then leather; the bag can look junky, gorgeous, popish or sheik.
The beauty of the bag is that it changes everyday like me.
Or so you'd think? At first, I did, until I went to talk to the designer about his creation.
The bag comes with pockets, but of course these pockets aren't set in place. That's right - put them where you want to. It's not just pockets, but an ipod, cell phone; anything can be attached by sticking some velcro on it.
The bag changes from simply being a receptacle for stuff into your own design piece. Your creativity slowly give the bag a face on its outer surface. The usefulness of the bag increases, almost as if it has its own plug-ins.
A bit of a revolution, right?

Foundation
"Everyone will become a designer", is comment by the bag's designer Washizawa, and seems to find expression in his creation.
Everyone becomes a designer and expresses themselves in their own way. Washizawa's design is the foundation for another, perhaps your, more personal expression. The inventiveness of newneu. to express is amazing.
I guess because it is that simple and to the point that it is able to become a foundation for other design.
If I had this bag instead of a rucksack when I was in elementary school I'm sure my life would be different.
Part of me which had been hidden away inside my bag is slowly showing on its surface. It makes me think, is that not what real "design" is?
What am I going to do today? Who will I meet? Where will I fight? I will equip myself, then head out for the day.

How did this start...?
The origins are in another official part of the bag, a cute emblem for Art Peace. I'm sure you've heard of them before?
Takeru Amano is responsible for the Art Peace art work.

In the beginning the plan was to release the bag as a collaboration with Amano Takeru. Washizawa thought the crest would gain a value of its own over time, so attaching it permanently to the bag would be a waste.
So why not make it so you can take it on and off when you like? And thus Washizawa's bag came to be.
That's when the thought came to use the same velcro in NASA's spacesuits. While Washizawa's idea is being used in a bag, the concept's possibilities have unlimited possibilities.
He's already applied for a patent, and has won this year's Good Design Award. I can't wait to see what happens in the future.
At Washizawa's company, Corroche, he is working on many other projects than newneu.; his vitality is amazing!
Mr. Washizawa is from Koenji, which is also where his shop, SAL is located. There are many other cool goodies to be found at his select shop.

During the day, however, he wears a completely different hat; he's a mystery!
The ability to successfully release an original bag, amongst other projects, is the fruit of his vitality. Wow.

I'm hooked...
The truth is... I'm hooked, line and sinker. I love the MONO-ME, it is really fun.
I just bought it, and so far I've only developed a few patterns, and while I'm slightly embarrassed, I have to share them.
First of all, I've gotten my hands on some extra fur that a coworker had. It has a visual impact of its own, sometimes people ask me about it when I'm out shopping.
I'm also quite fond of spangles.
The more you work on your newneum, the more you come to love it. I'm already a huge fan, but even if you take it easy with customization it's still fun. There are some beautiful brightly colored velcro tape's available you can buy, cut and make your own designs with. Just that alone sounds pretty awesome, doesn't it?
Well, buy one for yourself and see what you think. It's really fun.
